What started out as a simple doodle for a brush test painting, turned into a few sketches involving a robot hobo. While the one on the right isn't finished yet (and I want to paint some more panels) I wanted to post something again, so I figured why not this?

It may turn out to be an interesting project in the long run :). Who knows where the robohobo has been to and what it has seen? I'll try and post some updates to this in the coming days.

Finally finished the views of the main character of a short animation Yakup and I will hopefully finish someday. It's still subject to change, i.e.: maybe add some color or texture, maybe add or lose some parts or just change the entire design completely. For now, though, we have something to work off of :).

Very, very small update as I haven't had much time lately. I fixed the bones in its right arm and added some IK solvers to its head-, arm- and legbones. Rotational joint limits are still giving me some problems however. Guess I found my next hurdle to overcome :).

Not a whole lot of time to work on it, but I managed to fix a few issues. The striping that shows up on some parts of the model is intentional; those are indications of raised geometry (wood paneling).

Edit: I've replaced the previous update image with a more recent one. On to texturing!

The trailer/caravan is far from finished though: there are still some mistakes and there are still parts to be modeled and textured.

iPhone Sketchcrawl

Alright, so things happened that prevented me to go on a sketchcrawl (in my hometown) on Saturday so I went yesterday (Sunday). Seeing as how I still can't scan any drawings/sketches I made in my sketchbook to upload, I decided to do some on my iPhone. Although it didn't go as well as I wanted it to, mainly because the iPhone's screen very easily gets a glare which makes it difficult to see what you're doing, by moving to a shaded area I was able do do some paintings.

I also did some final touch-ups when I was back home. Alongside the "sketchcrawl" paintings I'm also posting something I've been working on for a while now, while commuting. I'm running out of ideas to work into the painting, so I might as well post what i have now. Maybe (hopefully) inspiration while strike at a some point in time. I'm not calling it done just yet.

Random Portraits

I wanted to practice some more faces today and for that I made a pretty large (both in dimensions and filesize) Photoshop file to paint them on. Although I wanted to draw a lot of different faces fast and not very detailed, I kind of got stuck on the second face in the image below. Painting faces with color instead of just value and making it look natural is still pretty tough for me. For some reason, the lips in particular still give me trouble :/. Guess I know what I should keep practicing for now :).

New faces/portraits will be added to the same canvas/image/file you see below.

I also went on a mini-sketchcrawl today. Seeing as how I didn't really have a lot of time (it was a spur-of-the-moment type of thing) I could only really draw one scene in my sketchbook. I'll probably go out this Saturday and try again. I still need to find a way to get the sketches scanned to put them up here without them looking crappy, though.

Perspective Practice 2

Here's the last paint-over, with a 3-point perspective. It came out looking pretty weird, probably because I put the vanishing points themselves too close together, leading to an ugly-looking extreme viewpoint. The composition could use some work as well and there's not enough depth, but I wanted to get it over with and move on to the next project.

Good lesson(s) to keep in mind for the next time :).

I've done some studies lately on how to improve my human face and general life-like drawing. Looking back, I felt that the last face I posted was pretty crappy so I went back to basics: gray scale and limited brushes :).

I'm not satisfied with the way I rendered her hair, but I consider this one done (as a testpainting anyway). I was thinking of maybe adding a nosepiercing or a small tattoo, but seeing as how this was more of an exercise than a straight-up character design I let her be for now :).

Maybe I'll come back to this one later, but first I have to keep practicing. There are still a few things I'm not happy with and I notice that I keep making the same mistakes when it comes to faces.

While looking up Horia Dociu's blog from conceptart.org's forums, I came across Kevin Dart. I really like what he's done with the 70's spy movie theme and love the style he uses throughout.

Here's the excellent trailer. Im getting more and more interested in animation (again :/), and it's projects like these that definitely help push that along.

The very first app I bought/downloaded on my new iPhone was, for me at least, a no-brainer: Brushes. I'm very happy with it and getting used to the interface didn't take as long as I thought it would.

This'll be perfect for sketches or studies while on the train or riding my bike and I hope to post some more iPhone paintings very soon :).

Edit: I removed the torch in the center. Wasn't working and I like it better without anyway.

Started messing around with overlay and color dodge layers and Google SketchUp. Also with adding texture to the entire image. It definitely could've used a lot more tweaking and detail, but I decided to stop and move on while things were still somewhat working. I definitely need to draw more from life.

In an effort to keep this blog going: while transferring files from one harddrive to another I found some sketches. I really like where the temple one was going; I should do something with it one of these days. Maybe re-sketch it digitally or turn it into a full-blown painting. We'll see.

If there's one thing I've learned from trying to draw an indoors scene, it would be that I'm not drawing enough of them. I spent too long trying to think of a half-way decent viewpoint. I just started sketching with some color and this is the (semi-finished) result.

I couldn't think of any other type of kitchen items I could put in the scene so I just left it the way it is right now. Perfect time to step away from it and do/draw something else.

I'll probably come back to this one later, but for now, I'm done.

Value Sketches

Alright, time to actually post something. Did some sketching today to practice values. I used some fashion leaflets for reference and I don't think it went all that bad. I did spend too much time though (about 15 - 20 minutes) and still ended up using linework here and there.

Aside from the aforementioned problems I also hit some difficulties in scanning the sketches. Apparently my scanner's software doesn't want to install (properly) on Vista and I can't seem to find any updated drivers and installers. Not too surprising considering it's an older model scanner, but still, kind of a bummer. My fault for not checking sooner I guess.

When I finally managed to scan the sketches, they turned out too bright and I can't be bothered to fix them any more than I already did.

So, to recap: get a better (newer) scanner, work on using values more when sketching and try to use less time when sketching (I'm thinking 10 minutes, tops).

Great way to start.
